Description

Perched on a height, with stunning sea views, as you enter the moviesque coastal village of Myrtleville, Co. Cork, you’ll find the gem that is The Lodge & Kitchen. Myrtleville, lying just west of the mouth of Cork Harbour - its beautiful beach, which is the nearest to Cork City, remains a bit of a hidden treasure unless you’re local to the area.

I first visited Myrtleville many years ago when the legendary Bunnyconnellan Restaurant was in operation. So, when I heard that the next generation, Paul O’Brien, had developed an impressive innovative operation in the village, I couldn’t wait to visit.

It’s the type of food people really want to eat nowadays, served in casual surroundings with four smiling Indian chefs working from an open kitchen facing onto a large colourful dog friendly terrace. Serving terrific small plates and specials of Asian – Indian, Korean, Japanese - and Moroccan foods at great prices, if that’s not your bag they also do stone-baked thin crust pizzas, imaginative posh burgers, and fish & chip specials served with skinny fries, Asian slaw and garlic-chilli aioli.

Eschewing Singaporean style cod laksa and Indonesian lamb rendang curry, we shared crispy Indian onion bhajis; Bombay Aloo Fritters, paratha bread; pan seared prawns in Moroccan Chermoula sauce; as well as Okonomomiyaki, a Japanese pancake loaded with shredded cabbage, scallions, crispy bacon, crab and prawns. The food was a delight, enjoyed at a picnic table, as were are glasses of non-alcoholic wine, not to mention the attentions of a hungry blackbird…

Beat a path.
