About The Restaurant

Perhaps Dublin’s poshest steakhouse, the superb Shanahan’s on the Green, caused quite a stir when it was opened in 1998, following a major refurbishment by Irish American John M. Shanahan of the magnificent Georgian building it occupies. Prominently located, as the name suggests, on the capital’s famed St. Stephen’s Green, plush and luxurious with a menu to match, this American meets Ireland brings together the best of both worlds with all the flavour and style of our cousins across the Atlantic meeting a gorgeous elegant European decor. Throughout the restaurant there are examples too of fine Irish craftsmanship, while in its downstairs bar, aptly named The Oval Office, there are documents and mementos on display of each American president who came from an Irish background.

Starters at Shanahan’s are focused on the surf end of the surf n' turf dynamic and include the likes of their fabulous iced jumbo shrimp cocktail with spiked tomato horseradish sauce and lemon, or perhaps sizzling black west coast mussels with shallots, garlic, herbs, fresh lemon and butter. You might see broiled Galway Oysters Rockerfeller with spinach, smoked bacon Pernod and Hollandaise, or a Castletownbere crab salad with tomato, cucumber and a herb mayonnaise.  A classic Caesar salad is always popular, as too are soup options like potato with sweetcorn and chilli salsa.

For the mains, a mouth-watering array of Shanahan’s Certified Angus Steaks are specially selected, aged and seasoned, and cooked in a special broiler at 1600-1800 degrees Fahrenheit to sear the outside while keeping the inside tender and juicy. It’s a carnivore’s playground, with steaks ranging from an 8oz petit filet through a 12oz filet mignon, 16oz New York strip sirloins, 24oz T-bone and Bone-In rib-eyes, all being served with caramelised onions and steak jus. Seafood is not to be forgotten with top notch poisson like pan-seared halibut with gremolata and basil marinated cherry tomatoes, or black sole with lemon caper butter. Sides are a must with the obligatory French fries being surrounded by choices like crispy fried onion strings, sautéed wild mushrooms, a copper pot of creamed spinach “bacon enhanced”, or whipped potatoes with butter and chives.

For dessert, expect to be spoiled with decadent delights like cookies and cream cheesecake with an Oreo cookie crust, and chocolate and vanilla sauces, or perhaps a chocolate cremeaux quartet.

Below, in their wonderful Oval Office bar, besides from great drinks, you can dine also whilst reclining in their luxurious leather armchairs listening to classics from Sinatra, Tony Bennet and so on.

Everything about Shanahan’s screams comfort, elegance and satisfaction. Book a table today, you won’t be disappointed.
