About The Restaurant
A delightful amalgam of modern and classic styles both in terms of the fare and indeed the decor, 'come for the good food', they say at The Selkie in Tullaghan, Co. Leitrim, 'and stay for the good vibes'. Catering for a wide range of tastes whether you’re a die-hard carnivore, a seafoodie, vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, the menus here have you covered on all counts. At the Selkie, they aim to offer the best organic and local ingredients possible in their superb seasonal menus. The energy here is relaxed and informal, the airy atmosphere buoyed by the attractive setting and the friendly professional staff.
Kick off your meal with some grilled Argentinian prawn yakitori with a spiced peanut dressing and crispy slaw, or some slowcooked pulled pork bao buns also available in a vegan version by way of jackfruit. They do a fab crab and gruyere cheese tartlet with fresh herbs and lemon crème fraiche not to mention their finger-lickin Irish chicken wings with Louisiana hot sauce and Cashel Blue dip. If that weren’t enough, there’s fried calamari with Romesco sauce, beetroot and gin cured Irish salmon and Korean crispy duck as well.
For the mains, sink your teeth into a succulent 9oz Irish Hereford ribeye steak with Lyonnaise potatoes, caramelised shallots, fresh greens, roasted cherry tomatoes, and a choice of brandy and green peppercorn sauce or Cashel Blue cheese sauce. They also offer an excellent 3 hour slow-cooked beef short rib served with garlic potatoes and charred tender stem broccoli. Irish duck breast is there, with cavolo nero, 5 spice squash puree, roast onion and a red wine sauce, not to mention the pan-roasted chicken supreme with bbq chorizo, buttery colcannon mash and greens. Fishophiles too will be impressed, with fine fishy dishys like panko coated lemon sole with a pickled cucumber salad, house boiled egg and tartare sauce, or Irish organic salmon with mixed greens and beurre blanc. For the veggies, there’s a sweet potato and butternut squash polenta cake that sounds utterly divine, as well as a yellow Thai curry available with prawns, chicken or tofu. Fancy a burger? They have a great menu for those too, with choices like a 6oz bacon and cheese burger, a 6oz chuck and brisket beef burger, a grilled Argentinian chicken burger, as well as a Beyond meat burger with vegan cheese.
For dessert, or 'Afters' as they call them here, tuck into a decadent chocolate and caramelised orange torte with stewed whiskey oranges and a gingerbread crumb, or what about a peach and vanilla pannacotta with peach compote and a blue berry sorbet. Their Kataffi split, with crispy banana, dark chocolate sauce and whipped Bailey’s cream sounds like heaven on a plate.
For great food, that's really on the nose of what today's diners want, in a relaxed and enjoyable setting, you can't go wrong at The Selkie.
