About The Restaurant
Set on Market Square in the beautiful historic town of Birr, Co Offaly, a superb array of varied Indian delights await you at Sanjay’s Kitchen. The Chef/Proprietor here is Sanjay Vishwakarma, who has a fantastic culinary pedigree, and whom I first met some years ago when he was Head Chef at one of my favourite restaurants, the much-loved Dublin hotspot Rasam in SoCoDu, not to mention having previously been Sous Chef at the prestigious five star Wildflower Hall resort in India. Since going out on his own a few years ago, he has been delighting patrons, many of whom travel long distances for his excellent authentic fare.
Starters at Sanjay’s Kitchen include fab dishes such as onion and red capsicum bhaji in a light gram flour batter; goats cheese samosa served with curry leaves and chilli dressing; or a traditional tandoor cooked seekh kebab. They do delicious jumbo jhingha prawns not mention squid pakora, the crispy fried rings being served with a tasty tomato chutney.
For the mains, there’s plenty to choose from with the menu being divided up primarily by your choice of meat. Favourites such as chicken jalfrezi or tikka masala are there, along with your lambs rogan josh and korma, not to mention the popular stalwart of mango prawn. They have some great biryani dishes, and lots too for vegetarians with a selection of meat-free dishes that includes the likes of aubergine chettinad, paneer makhani in a rich tomato and fenugreek sauce, and a tasty mixed veg korma.
If you're game for some less familiar dishes, check out their special mains selection, which offers dishes like Bharwan tandoori murgh - chicken breast stuffed with avocado, mozzarella & pine nuts and served with mushroom masala sauce, salad and podimas potato - or perhaps a monkfish tikka, the fresh poisson being marinated with a combination of mustard oil, roasted chickpea flour, ginger, garlic, garam masala, fenugreek leaves, chili powder, and yogurt, and served with curry leaf potatoes and mango sauce. Superb sides like south Indian style potatoes or stir fried button mushrooms with onion and tomato masala are not to be ignored.
Desserts at Sanjay’s Kitchen are a delight also, with some delicious sweet treats to explore such as Malai kulfi with cardamom, a rose petal brulee, or even a chocolate samosa served with vanilla ice-cream.
With great food, great service and great atmosphere, it would be hard to go wrong with a meal at Sanjay’s Kitchen.
By the way, on the first Thursday of every month they also offer a 4 course tasting menu showcasing the best seasonal produce on offer, so be sure to check it out too.
