About The Restaurant
Set in the busy buzzy town of Ballincollig in Co. Cork, The White Horse Gastropub is a longstanding and enduringly popular spot. First opened as a public house at the turn of the 20th century, for many years, it was under the baton of a woman named Mamie Murphy, the sister of Commandant Leo Murphy, who, in 1920 was one of the founders of the 3rd Battalion.
Flash forward to 2009, when Joe and Maura Carey took the reins, so to speak, and brought The White Horse into the 21st Century with style and taste, offering patrons a delightful country pub feel with an air of modernity both in their cuisine and eclectic drinks selections, not to mention their wonderful spacious beer garden.
Serving delicious fare from Wednsday to Sunday, starters at The White Horse feature the likes of 8 hour slow-cooked pork ribs coated in a homemade BBQ sauce; Vietnamese chicken spring rolls; or crispy Five Miletown goats’ cheese bon bons with beetroot relish, a mixed leaf salad, sundried tomatoes and a balsamic dressing. Their West Cork chowder is always a winner, or if you fancy some finger lickin’ buffalo chicken wings fried and tossed in Frank’s hot sauce, you’re in luck. Ribs and wings are also available in main course portions.
Moving on to said mains, you can expect some great meaty options with a selection of burgers, all 100% Cork Beef, ranging from a classic 6oz burger with crispy bacon and emmental cheese to their glorious White Horse Burger which starts off the same, but then add pickled gherkins, homemade chorizo jam, crispy lettuce, beef tomato and a side of crispy onion rings.
Steak lovers will be heaven here, with sumptuous chargrilled 10oz Hereford sirloins arriving with hashbrown chips, beetroot relish, Portobello mushroom, crispy onion rings, and a choice of pepper sauce or garlic butter. They have a great surf and turf option available also with an 8oz chargrilled sirloin steak meeting pan-fried prawns, potato rosti, tender-stem broccoli, beetroot relish, tomato salsa and garlic cream sauce.
Their ‘Fabulous Fish & Chips’ is always a winner, featuring golden fried Smithwicks battered catch of the day with homemade pea puree, hand cut chips and house tartar sauce.
They have a flavoursome chicken tikka masala available not to mention a tasty veg moussaka with layers of chargrilled Mediterranean vegetables, puy lentils, spinach and baby potatoes, steeped in a rich tomato sauce and served with pitta bread, raita, Feta cheese and an olive salad.
If you have a sweet tooth, then dig in to a delicious piece of homemade apple crumble with vanilla bean ice-cream and sauce Anglaise for dessert, or perhaps an indulgent warm dark chocolate brownie, also coming with aforementioned ice-cream.
By the way, The White Horse is also a perfect spot for private functions, from birthdays and BBQs to office parties and corporate events, with their cosy Hare’s Corner area opposite the beer garden. Check out their website for more details.
