Our Latest Great Place To Eat - Henry's Bar & Grill
Wednesday 10 December 2014
The restaurant and bar are both adorned with fine high polished woodwork throughout, which, when married with the crèmes and gold of the rest of the décor, creates a very cosy yet still high-end atmosphere in which to enjoy a great meal or a few drinks.
On my evening visit, their starters or ‘Small Plates’ included what we all just love - a traditional prawn cocktail. Brie is served with red onion marmalade and salad leaves whilst local mushrooms in a light batter are served with a piquant dip. Another favourite of mine are tandoori chicken skewers with mini yoghurt, poppadoms and salad leaves. However, being in the West, I went for Henry’s award winning seafood chowder, which didn’t disappoint, being a chunky flavoursome fishy delight served with their great homemade bread. Brendan opted for tempura battered prawns with a chilli and mayo dipping pot and loved them – I did too as I pinched a couple.
From the ‘Big Plates’, there was such a large selection that it was very difficult to decide and there is certainly something for everyone. Pan- seared fillet of salmon is served with smoked bacon cream; Mediterranean goat’s cheese with stir fry, sautéed garlic potatoes and grilled goat’s cheese. Beef Wellington comes with scallion mash and smoked bacon in a garlic cream sauce, whilst lamb shank is slow braised and served on creamy mash with thyme, root vegetables and a red wine jus. Chicken, beef or king prawn curries come with rice and poppadoms and the all-time favourite Irish stew also features. They also do a cracking burger with bacon and cheese on a flour bap, as well as a love gratin of seafood with cod, baby prawns and salmon. Their half roast crispy duck with burnt caramel and an orange glaze was very difficult to resist.
