Our Latest Great Place To Eat - An Canteen
Thursday 23 May 2013
Nowadays Dingle is not just known for its beauty and charm, or for its most famous resident Fungi the Dolphin, it is also now a serious foodie destination with a wonderful array of varying restaurants and bars, and now its own Dingle Food Festival each year in October.
An Canteen is the brainchild of brothers, Brian & Niall Ó Conchúir, who have created a friendly atmospheric eatery with a buzz in the heart of Dingle Town serving great food at great prices. Dingle is a Gaeltacht area, the brothers are native Irish speakers from Ballyferriter, so their menu is listed in both Irish and English offering the best of local and seasonal produce. Their fish is locally sourced in season wherever possible and the vegetables served at An Canteen are grown in their very own poly tunnel ensuring that the customers always get the freshest tastiest dishes possible.
Starters at An Canteen include their own daily seafood chowder served with homemade brown bread. The ever popular spicy chicken wings are served with a green salad and Cashel blue cheese dip, whilst their warm salad comes with bacon butternut squash, pumpkin seeds, scallions and Pecorino cheese and homemade brown bread. I, however, was immediately drawn to the delicious robust ham hock terrine with apple and pear compote, Pommery mustard salad and crusty toast, whilst Himself opted for a salad combination of Kalamata olives, Percorino cheese, sundried tomatoes with homemade brown bread. Both were delicious.
