Our Latest Great Place To Eat - The Winding Stair
Tuesday 21 May 2013
The Winding Stair Bookshop & Café was named after a Yeats poem, and in honour of its winding staircase. It became an iconic Dublin landmark in the 1970’s and 1980’s but when it was announced in 2005 that it would be closing, there was an outcry. Happily, in 2006, Elaine Murphy brought her experience and expertise to The Winding Stair and turned it into the dining icon it is today.
The room is wonderful, high ceilings, stripped floors, bentwood chairs, wooden tables, and an amazing view over the River Liffey; this is a totally Dublin restaurant. The focus, food wise, is seasonal and artisan Irish food cooked in a totally honest and delicious contemporary fashion – comfort food designed by a real foodie. I won’t say it was like your Granny used to make, because it is far better than your Granny used to make! I remember, the first time I visited The Winding Stair, being blown away by the fabulous pale hand smoked haddock (no luminous yellow stuff here). It was poached in milk with onions and white Cheddar mash and is so popular it still features on the menu today.
