Go Vintage in Borris, Co. Carlow, for Tractor Nuts Festival 2013

The nation is going VINTAGE mad with HUNDREDS of tractor nuts from all over Ireland and abroad descending on the quaint village of Borris in Co. Carlow on May 11th and 12th for the 10th annual Tractor Nuts Festival.

Tractor Nuts is celebrating its 10th anniversary in style this year with its first ever TWO day festival. Kick starting the annual fundraiser will be a vintage farmer’s market in the beautiful surroundings of Borris House on Saturday 11th May at 2pm.

All things vintage are coming out of the woodwork for this market – jewellery and hair accessories, crocheted scarves, wooden farm buildings for kids, recycled tractor notebooks and cards and vintage furniture.

Local artisan food producer selling their products include “The Wild Irish” with a range of vitamins syrups and sauces including rosehip and elderberry syrup, haw sauce, and victorian fruit cheeses.

“The Wild Irish” use old celtic recipes in an effort to revive the food practices of bygone days. Sharon Greene, head forager, says: “It is a lovely moment for us when our range evokes a childhood memory in a customer or when a little child asks what the berries are and gets excited at the taste of something new to them, but as old as time.”

The Borris Farmer’s market stales will burst with flavours with traybakes, speciality breads, savoury tarts, tapenades, cheese, organic vegetables, chocolates, flowers and much more on offer. It promises to be a great family day out with old fashioned games for kids, a dog show, a high nelly bicycle display, Mad Hatter’s tea party and cooking demo’s from TV3’s Edward Hayden and the ICA ladies.

On Sunday 12th May, one of the highlights will be the annual Tractor Run featuring beautifully restored vintage tractors rolling out from historic Borris House taking a scenic 26 km route up to Mount Leinster to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and the Irish Kidney Association. Ear to the Ground presenter, Helen Carroll will lead the tractor procession out of Borris town (12noon).

Also a new addition to this year’s festival is the Bachelors Bootcamp with local bachelors battling it out for the Bachelor of Borris title on Saturday May 11th. The bachelors will be put through their paces and made perform special tasks to turn them into prime husband material. TV3 Celebrity chef, Edward Hayden, will teach the bachelors a thing or two in the kitchen, sharing his secrets from his new cookbook “Food for Friends”, while local “cowboy” Billy Canning will put the Bachelor’s through their paces for their party piece that night at the Borris House Hoedown Barn dance. Tractor Nuts are delighted to have Masterchef finalists (2011) Clare Anne O’Keeffe as one of the glamorous judges.

Brian Kelly, a member of the Tractor Nuts committee since 2003, said Borris promises to host a Gathering never to be forgotten.

“There is a packed programme this year but the Tractor Run on Sunday 12th May will be very special with people waking up to the revving up of vintage tractors which will start their run at 12noon. Over the last ten years the Tractor Run has raised over €149,000 for the Irish Kidney Association and the Irish Cancer Society and this year we hope people will dig deeper to mark its 10th anniversary.”

People can support the cause through sponsorship cards.
