Our Latest Great Place To Eat - Gallagher's Boxty House
Friday 27 March 2020
For those of you who are unfamiliar, boxty is a traditional Irish potato pancake, which can be served in a myriad of different ways, being the focus of a dish or simply being an accoutrement to a different star ingredient.
Busy, buzzy and undeniably welcoming, from the moment we set foot in Gallagher’s, we felt at ease. Grabbing a table to the side of the room we began eagerly perusing the menus.
On our visit, starters included a rack of tender bacon ribs with a Jack Smyth stout BBQ sauce and apple & celery slaw; crispy Irish duck wings with a hot & sweet sauce and a honey & ‘Young Buck’ blue cheese dip; not to mention a selection of Irish farmhouse cheeses served with quince jelly, honey, candied walnuts, frozen grapes and house breads. Bayveen chose the Boxty crostini trio, with which she was delighted. While she thoroughly enjoyed the Irish Brie & red onion rendering, as well as the St. Tola goat’s cheese version, it was smoked salmon and chive sour cream number that reigned supreme for her. Meanwhile, I was busily enjoying a hearty bowl of the Boxty house chowder, a fishy delight of smoked and fresh seafood in a potato and fennel broth, with some fab stout and treacle bread on the side.
The mains had plenty to choose from as well, with great selections like pan-fried hake with sautéed mushrooms and baby spinach; a buttermilk marinated chicken burger served with twice cooked chips; or veggie options like a veg Sheperd’s pie or a sweet potato vegan burger. Don’t worry, for the dedicated carnivores, there’s a 10oz 28-day aged prime ribeye steak served with potato gratin, slow-roasted vine cherry tomatoes and a creamy peppercorn sauce.
