Our Latest Great Place To Eat - Bobby Byrne's
Tuesday 07 April 2015
Bobby Byrne's was first established in 1963 and quickly made a name for itself as a great local pub that was well known for its support of the local sporting endeavors, particularly rugby. Now in the second generation of the Byrne Family, this wonderful pub cum restaurant has gone through major re-developments and refurbishments in recent years keeping it in pace with the modern day, and adding a top notch kitchen and beer garden, without losing any of the warmth or authenticity which have made it such a popular place over the years.
On my visit to Bobby Byrne’s, starters included Bobby’s homemade soup of the day as well as their homemade seafood chowder. Brendan decided to try their Warm Cajun chicken salad, which was a fillet with smoked crispy bacon served on a bed of mixed leaves, sun dried tomatoes, croutons and parmesan shavings drizzled with a creamy garlic dressing. I, on the other hand, went for the old fave of smoked salmon, thinly sliced, on brown bread with a side salad and pickled cucumber, which was very nicely presented and tasted great.
For the mains, there was lots to choose from such as a seafood pasta bake of cod, hake, smoked coley, salmon and prawns cooked in a creamy white wine sauce with penne pasta topped with a herb and parmesan crumb; a peppered ½ pound pork chop was being served on an apple salsa with wholegrain mustard and honey sauce; not to mention their ‘Best Ever Fish & Chips’ in homemade beer batter, served with mushy peas, chips and homemade tartar sauce. I decided to try Bobby’s ultimate beef burger; a half-pound, topped with melted cheddar cheese, served with crispy onion rings, Bobby’s special burger sauce, a mixed salad and chips. Delicious! Brendan opted instead for their crunchy chicken strips served in a lightly spiced crunchy buttermilk batter with curry mayonnaise, chips and a salad.
